New Energy Efficiency Grants Announced for Small and Medium Businesses in Australia: Up to $25,000 Available

Blog | March 20th, 2023

The Australian Government has announced new Energy Efficiency Grants for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) this month, with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing energy efficiency practices, and helping small and medium businesses manage their energy usage and costs.

The program will run over two years, from 2022-23 to 2023-24, and will provide up to $25,000 to replace or upgrade existing equipment to improve energy efficiency and reduce costs.

The first round of grants will have a total funding of $16 million, with funding distributed between states and territories based on the distribution of small and medium-sized businesses nationally. The grant will cover up to 100% of eligible project expenditure.

This grant opportunity is for small and medium-sized businesses with an employee headcount of 1 to 199 employees. To be eligible, businesses must have an Australian Business Number (ABN) and be one of the following entity types:

  • an entity incorporated in Australia,
  • a partnership,
  • or a sole trader.

The projects must be aimed at reducing the energy consumption of the business in Australia and must have at least $10,000 in eligible expenditure. Eligible expenditure includes:

  • the purchase of energy-efficient equipment,
  • the cost of suppliers, consultants, and contracted labor undertaking eligible project activities,
  • and building permits or approval costs to install equipment, where required.

The Energy Efficiency Grants for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises will enable industries to reduce their energy use and manage energy cost volatility in the long term. This will contribute to Australia’s target of a 43% reduction on 2005 emission levels by 2030. In addition, the program aims to increase awareness of energy efficiency opportunities and help businesses save energy, reduce power bills for small and medium businesses, and contribute to emissions abatement.

It is expected that there will be a high level of interest in this grant opportunity, and it may be oversubscribed. Grants will be awarded to eligible applicants on a first-come, first-served basis until the funding is exhausted in each jurisdiction. Therefore, eligible businesses are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.
